Your Committee has decided to trial the replacement of cash payment for match fees with a plastic token.  Potentially this system has a number of advantages, both for the Club and its members, and so we have decided to use the coming season to make a start.
So, instead of paying your £3 match fee in cash, you will pay using a pre-purchased token.  These will be available from mid-April, well in advance of the new season, and can be ordered from the Treasurer at any time from now on.  Any quantity can be ordered, but it would probably make sense for regular match players to take them in batches of 10, or £30.
Any unused tokens must be returned to the Club at the end of the season, to be redeemed at their face value of £3 each.
If anybody really wants to continue paying in cash rather than tokens, this will be possible over the trial period - but you must have exactly £3 to do so, as change may not always be available on the day.

As always, members' views are paramount as to whether we adopt the token system permanently.  The fact that token payment is already in place in many bowls settings doesn't necessarily mean it will work for Duxford, but the Committee thinks it's worth giving it a try.

The Bowls Club had a very pleasant afternoon friendly match at Castle Camps on Sunday 21st August, winning on 3 rinks but going down by 3 shots overall.  It was agreed to call it a draw with honours all round.  Two of the Wednesday afternoon U3A group stepped in to complete our team, and it was particularly good to see Bruce Beavis back playing again.

The match was followed by a splendid tea & it was agreed to try and do it all again next year.

On a scorching hot Sunday afternoon Duxford hosted their first friendly of the season, against Castle Camps Bowls Club. The visitors won the match 3-1, but more importantly everybody enjoyed a very friendly game. Both teams took the opportunity to give experience to some new members and each rink was a closely contested encounter.

After the game, the bar did a brisk trade as fluids were replaced and then everyone enjoyed an excellent tea courtesy of Marjorie Salter, Margaret Stribling and Christine Wylde.

Castle Camps have agreed to a return fixture one Sunday afternoon in August and have promised to reciprocate with a special tea. It is hoped that members will put their names down for this match.

Valerie Beavis and Peter Dixon travelled to Haddenham Bowls Club for the first round of the Cambs and District Secretary & Treasurer's knock-out competition.  After 6 of the 21 ends it was 7-7 with the match finely poised, but unfortunately the Duxford pair only scored another 3 points over the remaining ends and finished 29-10 losers to a very consistent Haddenham duo.  Everyone agreed it had been a highly enjoyable evening for all concerned at what must be one of the prettiest bowls venues in the county.  Valerie deserves great credit for going through with the fixture, Bruce Beavis having suffered a serious heart attack earlier in the week.  Everyone at Duxford Bowls Club wishes Bruce a speedy recovery and hope to see him back at the Club sometime soon.
